Grimm’s Goblins

Regarded as one of the finest collections of fairy tales, Grimm’s Goblins was penned by the Brothers Grimm, Jacob, and Wilhelm.

Originally known as Children’s and Household Tales, this renowned German fairy tale anthology first appeared in Berlin with its initial volume in 1812 and the second in 1815. Over time, the Brothers Grimm released seven editions, each edition featuring alterations in the stories. The final edition was published in 1857.

The first volume of this beloved collection includes timeless tales such as Cinderella and Rapunzel.

The first editions received critics because the book had inappropriate content for children. Some of them said that this content could generate some misunderstandings. In fact, in Cinderella story, they changed the character of the evil mother to the wicked stepmother. Besides, they removed some references from Rapunzel‘s story. Since some mentions in the book could generate confusion and lead to sexual interpretations.

The authors responded to the criticisms from friends and reviewers. So, they did several modifications to the book to please readers and critics.

The Brothers Grimm themselves saw their collection as an educational book. But the primary purpose was to give a precise comprehension of the real world. And not to communicate the rules and norms of society. The book adapted academic concepts of romanticism.

Grimm’s Goblins are one of the most well-known works of German literature. Although the original fairy tales’ texts are unknown to most readers. As a result, there are details and information suppressed in the last editions.
